Overview

Machame Route or the “whiskey route” is one of the most popular routes due to its picturesque views and varied landscapes. However, climbing through Machame Route is a bit difficult as compared to the Marangu route. Even though the walk on the Machame route is steeper and longer, still the success rate is higher than on the Marangu route.

After an early morning start, the path steepens. The landscape changes into heath and moorland and the open landscape allows you to see the impressive mountain range. Today’s stage is shorter than the previous day and you will arrive at the New Shira Camp by mid-afternoon. The camp has a breath-taking view of the mountain and during sunset, the evening sun lights the rock face and glacier of Kibo.
Today you will climb about 800 m but you will be camping at an elevation only slightly higher than the previous night. This will allow your body to acclimatize as a height of over 4,500 m will be reached over the next two days. The trek begins with a long ascent above the Shira Plateau in the direction of the Lava Tower. The vegetation becomes sparser as the landscape changes to an afro-alpine desert. The route passes through the sweeping Barranco Valley with its lobelia and giant Senecio plants. After 6 to 7 hours, you will arrive at the most beautiful camp on the mountain – the Barranco Camp.
The Barranco wall also well known as breakfast wall just because you will ascend through it right after breakfast. Considerad the steepest part of the entire route, awaits you after breakfast. Without any technical climbing needed but for some parts you will need your hands for a better grip and to pull yourself up. Your guide will always be beside and give you a hand if necessary. After you have pulled yourself around the Kissing Rock you will make your way along the mountain ridge and through the Karanga Valley. You will pass the last water spot as you finally reach Karanga Camp. After a well-deserved meal, it is time for bed and charg for tomorrow.
Hike about 3-5 slowly to Barafu Camp. The landscape is very dry and the ground cracks like glass under your boots. As you make your way through the afro-alpine dessert to the rocky Barafu Camp, a sense of excitement sweeps over you as your final stretch is only a few hours away. The Barafu Camp with its rocky scenery allows for a stunning view of Mawenzi Peak and the summit path ahead. After an early dinner and last-minute preparation for tomorrow, you will go to bed before your wake- up call to start your summit ascent around 11:00 PM or midnight.
Summit day. After a cup of hot tea and a light snack, the summit climb begins at around midnight. With your head lamp full loaded will brightening our climb. After 5 to 7 hours of ascending in the dark, you will arrive at Stella Point (5,730 m), the crater rim of Mt Kilimanjaro.
